Spring 2025 Update

Through the Commonwealth’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program, the Town of Stoneham was recently awarded a grant for the wetland restoration effort around the high school property for $2.35M. The goal of this project is to provide a healthy, resilient wetland area that will help to mitigate local flooding but also provide regional benefits to downstream resource areas including wetlands and Doleful Pond, which contribute to the broader Mystic River Watershed. Additionally, new accessible trailheads and pathways with signage will provide connection to a natural open space and to the high school.

The design project team includes Horsley Witten Group, Inc. and Pare Corporation, who will be leading the engineering and restoration work. Additionally, the Town is working with the Mystic River Watershed Association to lead the community engagement efforts for the project.

The design team and MyRWA will be hosting a community stewardship event on May 10th from 9am-12pm (rain date May 17th 1-4pm). We will be focusing on removing bittersweet and porcelain berry from the wetlands, as well as trash and debris. More information on activities, parking & access, and day of logistics to come by the end of April.

In June, the design project team and the Town will present project updates and more information about construction timing.  Stay tuned for more information!
